Check canola to be stored over summer

Canola harvested last fall and still in on-farm storage can be at risk from heating. Hot outside weather will restart moisture movement within a bin, and if the canola has other risk factors – such as higher moisture and/or dockage – that concentrated moisture could lead to heating.

Monitor bins through the summer, but you don’t have to run air through the bins. If canola in the bin is dry and cold coming out of winter, then just leave it be. Monitor the temperature, watching for any rapid increases. Have a plan to move the seed if an issue arises.
